Supreme Court Video Reflection

The Lasting Influence of the Supreme Court

One of the most interesting things I learned from the Supreme Court video was how a Constitution that is more than 200 years old continues to play such an important role in American government. According to the video, the Constitution helps safeguard liberty, preserve the Union, and uphold the rule of law.

The Supreme Court stands at the center of that system. Although it is often described as a quiet institution, it has the authority to tell the president, Congress, and the states what they may or may not do. Over time, Americans have accepted the Court’s authority, making it one of the most influential institutions in the country.

I was especially surprised by the process of becoming a Supreme Court justice.

The video compared being appointed to the Supreme Court to being struck by lightning, emphasizing how rare and difficult the opportunity is. Justices are appointed by the president, and the position carries enormous responsibility because their decisions can affect the entire nation.

The video also discussed the Court’s history and growth in influence. After the federal government moved to Washington in 1801, the Court gradually gained respect during the years of Chief Justice John Marshall. His leadership helped strengthen the Court’s place within the federal government.

Not every chapter of the Court’s history has been positive. The Dred Scott case, involving an enslaved man who claimed his freedom, was described as a wound on the Court’s legacy. Learning about this case showed how Supreme Court decisions can have lasting consequences.

Another fact that surprised me was the Court’s workload. I assumed the Supreme Court received far more than around 100 new cases each week. Instead, the justices carefully review petitions and meet weekly to decide which cases they will consider.

The process itself reflects the Court’s commitment to fairness. Every petition receives individual consideration, and when the Court chooses not to hear a case, the lower court’s decision is upheld. I also found it interesting that the justices begin by shaking hands with one another and follow a system in which everyone speaks once before anyone speaks twice.

Overall, the video showed that the Supreme Court’s power comes not only from the Bill of Rights, but also from traditions, procedures, and the public’s acceptance of its role in American government.

AI Disclosure: AI was not used in the research and information for this blog port. All information came from notes that I took while watching a video titled "Supreme Court of the United States." I then promoted Microsoft Copilot Pro to help me shape my notes into a blog post of between 300-350 words written in a smooth professional style. I then added links to online sources that the reader could pursue for more information. Finally, I added appropriate images and captions to help break up the type and give the post a more professional look.
